Joint design

The joint shall be designed to suit the required mobility of the sealant. The width of the joint shall be ≥ 6 mm and ≤ 20 mm. A ratio of width to depth of approximately 2 : 1 shall be maintained. Joints ≤ 10 mm wide are intended for shrinkage control and are therefore non-mobile joints. For joints of larger widths please contact Sika Technical Department for further information.

Application

Substrate preparation - The substrate must be clean, dry, stable, homogeneous, free from dirt, grease, dust, cement laitance, old sealants and poorly adhering paints, which could adversely affect the adhesion of the sealant/adhesive. The substrate must have sufficient strength to withstand the stresses exerted by the sealant during its mobility.

Surface preparation techniques include wire brushing, sanding with sandpaper or other suitable tools and mechanical methods. Dust, loose and loosely adhering particles should be completely removed from all surfaces prior to the application of primers, activators or the sealant/adhesive itself.

Sikaflex 111 Stick & Seal is adhered without primers and/or activators. However, for optimum adhesion, sealing durability and in critical and high performance applications, the following priming and/or substrate preparation procedures should be used:

  • Non-porous substrates Aluminum, anodized aluminum, anodized aluminum, stainless steel, PVC, galvanized steel, electrostatic metal paints or glazed tiles should be lightly abraded with a fine abrasive cloth. Clean and prepare the surface by applying Sika Aktivator-205 on a clean cloth. Before bonding/sealing, allow a drying time of > 15 minutes (< 6 hours). Other metals such as copper, brass and titanium-zinc should be cleaned and prepared with Sika Cleaner P or Sika Aktivator-205 on a clean cloth. Observe drying time > 15 minutes (< 6 hours). Apply Sika Primer-3 N with a brush. Allow an additional drying time of > 30 minutes (< 8 hours) before bonding/sealing.
  • Porous substrates Concrete, aerated concrete and cementitious-based mortars, coatings and bricks should be primed using Sika Primer-3 N applied by brush. Before sealing/adhesion, allow a drying time of > 30 minutes (< 8 hours).

For detailed instructions contact Sika Technical Department. Note: Primers are adhesion promoters. They are in no way a substitute for proper cleaning of the substrate, nor do they significantly improve the strength of the substrate. Primers additionally improve the long-term durability of the adhesion of the sealed joint.

  • Removal of fresh residues from application tools and equipment can be carried out using Sika Remover-208
  • Hardened and/or cured material can only be removed mechanically
  • For hand cleaning use EVERBUILD WONDER WIPES Multi-Use
  • Support material Use closed structure, polyethylene foam cords
  • Hanging flow 0 mm (20 mm profile, 23 °C) (ISO 7390)
  • Ambient temperature +5 °C minimum / +40 °C maximum
  • Substrate temperature +5 °C minimum / +40 °C maximum, at least 3 °C above dew point
  • Curing rate ~3 mm/24 hours (23 °C / 50 % S.W.) Sika Corporate Quality Procedure (CQP 049-2)
  • Skin set time ~35 minutes (23 °C / 50 % S.W.) (CQP 019-1)
  • Yield (1 290 ml cartridge) ~100 spot applications : Diameter = 30 mm Thickness = 4 mm ~15 m cord: Nozzle diameter = 5 mm (~20 ml per running meter)
